A DAY IN THE SUN FOR MUSEUM GRAND OPENING

Moclips-by-the-Sea did it self proud on the sunny Saturday morning of January 18, 2003: when our president, Kelly Calhoun, opened the doors on the new museum of the North Beach in Moclips.

Following the dedication Lycan Park, a wave of people and cars poured onto S. R. 109 heading toward the old Hewitt’s building. Everyone wanted to be one of the first to see the museum and they were not disappointed.

Kelly stood on the step in front and gave the crowd a friendly speech of gratitude for all the hard work put in by many dedicated volunteers to make this project a reality. He then had the secretary (yours truly) unveil the large museum of the North Beach sign, which was done to cheers and applause.

Next, Kelly had Kathy Jaquet cut the red ribbon. He said that it was her longtime interest and enthusiasm in all things Moclips that first inspired his own interest. It’s true, without Kathy – our very own Lady-on-the-Beach – Moclips would not be quite as special as it is.

And then, after much anticipation and fanfare the doors were opened and the influx began.

People came in droves all throughout the day. Our guest book recorded 143 signatures, but we know that many people didn’t sign it. We estimate around 200 turned out.
Kelly, Kathy and I think that the residents of the North Beach have needed a place to preserve their rich history for a long time now. Judging by our opening day – a lot of people agree. It was a rousing success!

THE STORY BEHIND THE MUSEUM OF THE NORTH BEACH

One day back in 1999, I walked into the Falcon’s Rest Gift Sop in Moclips where I met the owner, Kathy Jaquet. She had some wonderful vintage photos of Moclips on the walls. That was my introduction to the astonishing history of Moclips and the North Beach. Kathy mentioned that she was doing research for a book she was composing about Moclips. I than began to recollect my own memories of the North Beach from when I was young back in the late 1950’s and into the 60’s. A lot of things had changed – even since then.

Kathy, Lee Marriott and myself became good friends and over the course of the next year, we had discussed the history of the area on many occasions.

By this time, my business partner Lee and I became addicted to eBay. We found a lot of old items from the North Beach and paid top dollar for some of them. Some came from as far away as Europe! Most were from the east coast and mid-west.

A year later, in 2001, we tossed around the idea about doing something. One idea was to form a “club” to gather all this wonderful information together and share it with others. The 100th anniversary of Moclips was coming up in 2005. Something had to be done!

Since Kathy was already writing a book and we had a basic idea in our heads, we contacted the Daily World in Aberdeen. We were interviewed and photos were taken. Our story wound up on the front page. Not bad for just an idea and nothing else.

Three months later in July 2001, we formed the historical society; published our first newsletter and accepted our first members, Jim & Gail Gage. This is when the idea for a museum came to be! Eighteen months and 201 members late, the Museum of the North Beach opened to the public! As is true with all museums, this one will never be complete. It’s a work in constant progress.

VOLUNTEER MUSEUM RENOVATION

Our last newsletter listed all the volunteers who helped with the drywall. Since then, texturing and painting were completed. Our numerous outdoor signs had to be painted. There were windows to clean, caboose to work on, and the floor got the once-over, twice! The final 3 days were devoted to displays and signs.

The second stage volunteers were: Sid Curtright, Jeff Pickett, Dave Kelley, Linda Kelley, Lee Marriott, Kathy Jaquet, Virginia Nordman, Katie Detrick, Chuck Austin, CindyLee White, Sam Cohea, Gloria Cohea, Dolores May, Shari Curtright and Herb Montano.

The Wacky Warehouse picked up and delivered 6 display cases from the Polson and Aberdeen museums. One month after opening, we started “remodeling” with the construction of a very large raised platform for our beach display. Kelly and Lee drew up the plans. Herb Montano built the massive structure from materials he and Vera Miles of Pacific Beach donated. Thank You!

GEMS AND GEMSTONES

Your membership dollars go to a general fund that pays for printing our newsletter, other printings and postage. We rely on donations to help with museum costs and acquisitions. Harriet Baller sent a cash donation in addition to her membership renewal. Herb & Leah Montano, Bev Callaway and Enid & Charles Dempster gave cash donations. Sam & Young Yi of the Lighthouse Restaurant donated $300.00. THANK YOU!
